The month of March is usually a period of rainfall, and marks the beginning of the first planting period in the village of Bukomolo in Eastern Uganda. With GWI’s agriculture project, it’s the time when women get excited to work in the farm so that they can get income to cater for their family basic needs.
However, this year seems different. There is no rainfall yet, and therefore, no farm activities. Life is becoming very hard for the women who depend on GWI’s farm activities. These women work for basics needs such as soap, salt, cooking oil, food or clothing.
And today as the world cerebrate the International Women’s Day, these women do not believe if it is appropriate cerebrating given that even prices of basic needs are soaring amidst joblessness. In the market for example, a bar of soap now cost about $3 from less a dollar.
These women claim that part of their responsibilities is keeping clean and they need soap to wash clothes, utensils, or bathe their children to keep away from infections.
