World Malaria Day in Bukomolo

The baby admitted at the clinic

This woman brought her baby at our clinic in Bukomolo critically ill.

She said she was treating the baby from her home with tablets she bought from a drug shop in the trading centre near her home.

When asked the type of tablets she used, she could not explain and she didn’t know its name.

When our physician tested the baby, it was malaria. Now, the situation of this woman is one of the many cases we receive at our clinic. Every day, at least nine of the ten patients we treat have tried self medication and they suffer malaria.

So, as we join to commemorate the World Malaria Day, we have started a campaign to engage the community in better malaria disease management. We are encouraging people to come to the clinic and get tested before they start treatment.

80% of the patients we receive every month and they are mainly children and women.

We have a team that moves within the community to teach about symptoms and signs of malaria, encouraging clearing of broken pots and bushed around homes to prevent mosquitoes from breeding and to sleep under bed net.

Malaria alone accounts for 80% of the patients we receive every month and they are mainly children and women.
